Children’s Ministry

Children’s Ministry

“For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”  Acts 2:39

Children, at Mercy, are considered a vital and integral part of our congregation.  Throughout the history of redemption, God the Father has always included children in His providence and care and has called the church to do likewise.  He commands the church to declare his work from one generation to the next, to proclaim the promise of reconciliation to our children, and to consider that it is children who display the kind of faith that we are each called to.  At Mercy Presbyterian Church we hope to include children in all aspects of our ministry; seeking to gather them to Christ, to defend them from evil, and to equip them with God’s word, that they might stand firm.

We believe this happens primarily through the family and personal relationships.  We also provide the following avenues of ministry to serve our children:

Children’s Sunday School

Children’s Sunday School begins the last week of August each year and extends until the last week in May.  We meet each Sunday morning from 9:15 – 10:15am in the classrooms at Forest Middle School.  There are a variety of age appropriate classes with personal, winsome, and wise teachers overseeing each class.  Most classes will progress through material from Great Commissions Publications or through material from Desiring God Ministries.  Everyone is welcomed to these classes and we encourage families to consider this ministry as an opportunity for you and your children to grow in knowledge and understanding of the gospel.

Vacation Bible School

Each summer we offer an interactive week of fun, excitement, and Bible knowledge for the children of Mercy and our community.  Vacation Bible School is a wonderful opportunity for children to grow in their faith during the summer months.  This year’s VBS will be June 19 – 22nd and it will be hosted at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

During each worship service we provide:

We provide two separate nurseries.  One nursery is for crawlers (who are not yet walking) and the other nursery is for walkers (up through age 3).  This time is primarily caring for children so that parents can spend time in worship and our volunteers will use the time to pray for your children and engage them on basic gospel truths.

Equip for Worship

Equip for Worship is intended to better equip a child to understand and participate in the church’s worship.  It is available for children ages 4 and 5.  These children will attend the first portion of the service with their families and they may be excused prior to the sermon to attend Children’s Church.  Equip for Worship will last approximately 30 minutes and will involve an activity, a lesson from the The Jesus Storybook, a song and/or craft, and prayer.  Children will be brought back to their families for the final song and benediction.

Children In Worship

It is our desire, at the very least, that children 6 years and older would be able to participate in the full service of worship.  We provide note taking material to help engage younger children.
